Family Law Services

At Harbour Family Law, everything we do is built on care, sensitivity, and sound judgement.

We support individuals and families through divorce, separation, financial matters, arrangements for children, and protective agreements. Whatever brings you to us, our role is to help you understand your options and move forward with confidence.

Since Harbour Family Law was founded in 2013 we have helped thousands of people across Bristol, Clevedon and Portishead through some of the most difficult periods in their lives. Our solicitors combine expert legal knowledge with a constructive, personal approach that reflects the fact that every family situation is different.

As a specialist family law firm, all of our solicitors are members of Resolution, the professional body for family justice professionals committed to resolving matters in a constructive and non-confrontational way. Our Directors include both the current and former Chair of the Bristol Resolution Committee. Other team members include accredited collaborative practitioners, and a solicitor who holds a Doctorate in Family Law, with published work in the Family Law Journal.

Members of our team are trained in collaborative practice, which allows families to work towards agreements without court intervention. All of our solicitors also volunteer through the Bristol Law Centre, offering pro bono advice to people who may not otherwise be able to access legal support. Two of our solicitors are current or former trustees of Relationship Works (formerly Relate).

Our Family Law Services

We offer a range of family law services to support individuals and families through separation, divorce, and related legal matters. Whether you need help with finances, child arrangements, or an agreement to protect your future, our solicitors can demystify the process and guide you towards the best next step.

Every family situation is different, so the support you need will depend on your circumstances, but here is some of the work our specialist solicitors can help you with:

Divorce

Divorce can be one of the most difficult periods in a person’s life. We support clients through the legal process with sensitivity and care, helping them understand what needs to happen and how the wider issues around the marriage breakdown (including children, property, and finances) can be resolved.

Civil Partnership Dissolution

The legal process of ending a civil partnership is similar to divorce, and the issues that come with it are identical. We can support you through the dissolution itself while also advising on finances and the practical arrangements that need to be considered alongside.

Financial Settlement

When a relationship ends, finances are often the most complicated aspect to untangle. We can provide specialist legal advice on property, savings, pensions, investments, and wider financial claims, and we are happy to work with other professionals to build a fuller picture.

Child Arrangements

If you are a parent, we understand that your child comes first in your life. We help parents work through questions around where children will live, how time will be shared, and how arrangements can be put in place in a way that supports their wellbeing. We will listen to you with an empathetic ear and try to find a way forward that is best for everyone involved, but your child most of all.

Pre-Nuptial Agreements

A pre-nuptial agreement helps couples set out how their assets should be treated if their marriage later breaks down. It’s not about expecting the worst: if you have property, business interests, inherited wealth, or other significant assets, a prenup can give you peace of mind.

Post-Nuptial Agreements

If you are already married and want to put a formal financial agreement in place, post-nuptial agreements are something to consider. We can discuss whether it’s the right approach for you and your spouse, and help you put one in place in line with legal procedure.

Your Initial Consultation

Whatever point you are at in your journey, you can always speak to us for assistance and legal guidance.

In the first meeting, we’ll sit down over a hot cup of tea or coffee and listen to your journey and situation. We ask a few questions, get a sense of what is going on, and what you need help with most. From there, we’ll talk you through where you stand legally, what choices are open to you, and what happens next. We will always be honest with you if your intentions might backfire, and we cover fees early on, so there are never any nasty surprises.

Your initial consultation will run for up to 90 minutes, for a discounted 60-minute flat rate.

Cohabitation Agreements

Living together doesn’t give unmarried couples the same legal protections as marriage or civil partnership. A cohabitation agreement helps you record how property, finances, and other shared arrangements work while you are living together and if you separate.

Separation Deeds

If your relationship has broken down, but you’re not ready for divorce or dissolution, a separation deed can set in stone what you have both agreed upon in regard to finances, giving you certainty and security while you decide what comes next.

Injunction Orders

If your situation has become hostile, intimidating, or unsafe, urgent legal protection may be needed. We can advise on whether an injunction may be appropriate and help you take the next step as safely as possible.

Mediation

Mediation is there to help couples work through finances, child arrangements, or both on their own, without going straight to court. We can support you with legal advice, guidance, and help in understanding any proposals being discussed.

Collaborative Law

Collaborative law lets separating couples work towards an agreement in a constructive way with the support of specially trained solicitors. Unlike mediation, where a neutral third party guides the discussion, collaborative law means you each have your own solicitor involved throughout the process.

‘’Having come through an extremely difficult time and also being represented by another firm for over 12 months, I never thought I would see the end of a torrid period. Moving to Harbour Family Law and being represented by Katy was categorically a “breath of fresh air” and changed everything in a positive way. Katy was extremely sympathetic, trustworthy and professional. I cannot recommend Katy and her firm enough. I was at a point of no return and moving to Harbour Family Law literally changed everything……thank you Katy.’’
